EC backs Thapa-Sharma group, recognises Special Convention

Kathmandu, January 17

The Election Commission has recognised the special convention of the Nepali Congress.

A meeting of the Commission held on Friday decided to declare the special convention lawful and in line with the party statute, and to update the details of the office-bearers selected from the convention.

With this decision, all resolutions passed by the special convention will be officially recognised. The claim made by the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction that the special convention could not be recognised has thus been automatically rejected.

From now on, decisions and actions taken by the Gagan Thapa–Bishwa Prakash Sharma group, including direct nominations and other organisational matters, will be considered official. With the recognition of the special convention, the old central working committee led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has also automatically become invalid.

Following the Election Commission’s decision, the dissatisfied faction still has the option to approach the Supreme Court.
